Alamat ng Rosas

The story entitled "Alamat ng Rosas" or "The Legend of the Rose" was written by Segundo D. Matias Jr., and was illustrated by Ghani Madueño. The author won the First Prize in Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature 2011,for his book "Alamat ng Duhat". He also won his teleplay "Loida: Taxi driver" in 1991. He has written for screenplay in ABS-CBN,and also Lino Brocka Presents, and screenplays of Regal Films, Seiko Films, at Viva Films. He is one of the members of Writers Studio Manila, a group of qriters for both tv and film.
Ghani Madueno did the illustrations. He is working as Art Director at GMA Networks.He is also a member of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), a group of illustrators of children's book.
The book does not seem attractive and interesting at first glance, nor does it appear appropriate for children. But I want the children to know and be interested in how things around them were created as legends would say.
The story is about how the roses were created. Long time ago, there was a queen who was like no other in beauty. She had many suitors, but only King Hulio captured her heart. Her suitors were ready to give all their treasure just to win Rosa's heart. One day, a witch came upon her and expressed desire to exchange her face with Rosa's, but Rosa refused. The witch would do whatever Rosa wanted in exchange for Rosa's face. King Hulio saw it and shouted, "Once you come to trouble us here again, I will kill you." The witch got frightened. Because of what happened, King Hulio decided to hide away Rosa to the topmost part of the tower, but to be more sure that the witch can't come to trouble Rosa, he surrounded the tower with sharp thorns, so that she would be protected. On the other kingdom, there lived a king who was envious of King Hulio-King Alvaro. King desired her and believed that he was the only one who could possess her. One day, he ordered his servants to attack King Hulio's palace and kidnap Rosa. When the King knew about King Alvaro's plan, he immediately attack King Alvaro's kingdom, but when they reached the forest they can no more get out, and the King knew it was the witch who did that. That same day, King Alvaro reached King Hulio's palace. The soldiers immediately took Rosa away. Rosa knew then that something was happening to King Hulio. Rosa asked the witch to take her to the secret garden so that there he would be seen by his beloved. She then became a rose. At that moment, King Hulio was able to get out of the forest. He saw Rosa, but that wasn't the real Rosa,it was the witch. From then on, everyday he looked after the red flower and saw it flourish. When King Hulio died, he became the thorns of the red flower.
The story teaches us not to be envious of what others have; instead we must be grateful for and contented with what we have.

She is fun,loving and jolly person. Someday, she wanted to be an outstanding teacher. It's her dream to have a big SPED School and to build a group of volunteer teachers to teach children that can't afford to go to school.
