by Collene Reyes

Author: Virgilio S. Almario
Illustrator: Hubert B. Fucio
Publisher: Adarna House
Year of Publication: 2011
Si Hinlalaki by Virgilio S. Almario is a perfect story book for children in the age of 9 and above. It tells how Hinlalaki is different among Inang Kamay's children. However, one incident allowed Hinlalaki to discover his worth despite being different from others.

Virgilio S. Almario, the author, did not only write a book for children for entertainment. He did a clever job at introducing to the readers the name of a human being's fingers, particularly in Filipino, which are often neglected. Moreover, Si Hinlalaki teaches children not only the names of the fingers but to discover their own worth and realize that being different can be a positive trait. Everyone is different from others which make each person unique. However, being different often times give children the connotation that it is not a positive trait. A child may feel that he or she is not tall, strong, or smart like others but through the story, children are being taught that each individual has something to offer through their own unique way. It teaches how being different has a positive side. This lesson is very important especially to children growing up with insecurities and low self-esteem.

The way Virgilio S. Almario wrote the book was simple yet profound. Children at the age of 9 and above will definitely understand the story and its message. The illustrations of Hubert B. Fucio supplemented the story effectively. It was straight forward to what the author is trying to say. Moreover, it was simple yet creative that fits perfectly within the authenticity of the story.

Virgilio S. Almario wrote an eye opener to children particularly those who have insecurities or with low self-esteem. This book is highly recommended for children in the age of 9 and above for its creativity and message. Children will truly enjoy reading this and grab meaningful lessons in it.
